Breville breaks new ground with its latest small home appliance, a large capacity toaster oven that also air fries food.
Every so often a kitchen appliance comes along that’s truly game-changing. You wouldn’t think it would be a toaster oven in that they’re about as exciting as an electric can opener. But the Breville Smart Oven Air is redefining how we cook by now being powerful enough to be an air fryer. You roll you eyes but it’s true. It’s the company’s first combo toaster oven and if you’re looking for a healthy way to reduce a substantial amount of fat calories without scarifying taste, there’s nothing better on the market than the Breville Smart Oven Air. Everything you need to know on why we call it the Best Toaster Oven for 2018 is found below.
We all know that fried foods are on the “unhealthy” list. Some researchers say that friend foods may cause cancer. While we are not scientists, it only makes sense that cooking your food in an air fryer reduces the risk of developing cancer compared to traditional frying in oil.
How does an air fryer work, you might ask? Air fryers work by using a healthy convection heating system to generate enough heat and swirling air to crisp and caramelize food. We use the word healthy because air purifiers cook without oil. In our testing of the Breville Smart Oven Air, not only did we find that air fried food tastes better than fried food, it cooks faster.
Here’s the thing, none of us here at work are lovers of beets. That said, for the heck of it we sliced some red beets and threw them into the Breville air fry/dehydrate mesh basket. The result was crispy beats that tasted, dare we say it, like potato chips.
While we can’t say the same with cauliflower (there’s just something about cauliflower that we’re not into right now), what we can tell you that the process only took a few minutes. In fact, we were amazed at how fast the Breville heats up. By the time we sliced the beets, it was ready to go. We had crisp, sweet air-fried beets to snack on in about ten minutes (the cauliflower took a minute less). And because we used no oil, there was nothing to clean up.

Other abilities in the Breville’s stable include modes to bake, broil (at 500°), roast, dehydrate, reheat and warm. There are pre-programmed setting for pizza (up to 12-inch) and cookies. At 17.2“ x 21.4” x 12.8”, the large-capacity countertop oven can roast a 14-pound turkey, accommodate a 12-cup muffin tray and toast as many as nine beagles or slices of bread. A PID temperature control promises stable temperature and there’s an optional convection cooking function. There’s even an interior oven light, something other toaster oven we at looked do not have. Plus, we found you can use the Breville as a slow cooker by pairing it with a covered dish.
The not so good
Expensive but it does so many healthy things that it’s well worth owning.
The bottom line
The Breville Smart Over Air is the perfect tool for making healthy, homemade meals and snacks in minutes without lots of work and baking sheets to clean up. Breville is best in the business when it comes to toaster ovens, and now it offers the best air-fryer, too.
