On the hunt for an electric toothbrush? This one’s smart.
If you love the feel of clean teeth and want to take the guesswork out of brushing then the Phillips Sonicare DiamondClean Smart is right up your alley. Phillips claims that this technologically advanced rechargeable toothbrush removes up to 10x more plaque, improves your gum health by 7x, removes up to 100% more stains, and even kills bad breath germs.
Some products are easy to review. Unfortunately the Sonicare DiamondClean Smart is not one of them. Reviewing a toothbrush is not the same as plugging in a vacuum cleaner to see how easily it removes pet hair. There is no way for us to tell if the DiamondClean really makes your teeth whiter, healthier and squeaky clean (well, maybe we can tell the squeaky clean part).
Phillips say you’ll notice the difference in a couple of weeks. Truth is, most toothpastes these days claim the same thing with their advanced formulas. But can you really tell the difference? We can tell you toothpastes basically have the same ingredients. There are some differences, buy they’re all very minor in the scheme of things. And none of them are powerful enough to remove more than surface stains.
We could be wrong, but like whitening toothpastes, the DiamondClean removes stains caused by things like drinking coffee and smoking. It can’t change the natural color of your teeth or lighten a stain that goes deeper than a tooth’s surface.
So, then, what’s so special about this toothbrush that we recommend it over a $3 brush at the drugstore? And why is it better than the competition?
To begin with, we really like electric toothbrushes in general because they help you break your bad brushing habits. And this one does more than others.
Let’s start with the five different brush modes the DiamondClean comes with—clean, white+, gum health, deep clean+, and tongue care.
As you might expect, clean mode is for regular everyday cleaning. In terms of the other four modes, white+ is for removing tough stains, gum health gently cleans your gums, deep clean+ provides an energizing deep clean, and tongue care removes bad breath bacteria from the tongue. The DiamondClean has three intensities that allow you to choose between a higher setting to boost your clean and a lower one for sensitive mouths.
What we really find neat about the DiamondClean is that it takes the guesswork out of which mode and intensity you should use. That’s because each brush includes a microchip that tells the DiamondClean which brush you’re using. So if you click on a gum care brush head, for instance, your toothbrush knows to select the best mode and intensity for that brush head. All you need to do is to press the power button. That’s technology for you.

But there more. The DiamondClean has a location sensor that shows you where you’ve brushed, and more importantly, where you haven’t. Plus, there’s a scrubbing sensor that reminds you to let the brush do the work. From our point of view, perfecting your brushing technique and building healthy habits have never been easier.
We should point out that Phillips offers the DiamondClean in a range of colors, but the one we are writing about is white.
Now here’s the thing: we’ve been using Sonicare brushes for about four years, and the one thing we can tell you for sure is that the brush heads need to be replaced on a regular basis. The DiamondClean comes with three premium brush heads plus a tongue care+ brush. These will have to be replaced approximately every three months.
Regardless of which mode you are in, brushing with the DiamondClean is a quite and enjoyable experience that lasts two minutes.
As for the overall brushing experience, before switching to Sonicare we brushed with several competitive electric toothbrushes. All of these brushes help you ditch your bad brushing habits—like not brushing long enough. That alone will pay for the price of an electric brush by reducing the need for dental work. But there’s just something special about Sonicare that puts it squarely at the top of the range when it comes to electric toothbrushes. It might be the advanced technology. Or maybe it’s that squeaky clean feeling.
The not so good
Expensive but in the long run it will save you on dental work.
The bottom line
Reviewing an electric toothbrush is not easy, especially when the results are not immediate. The Philips Sonicare DiamondClean Smart, however, sits squarely at the top of our list. It has all the features you’re looking for and then some. At well over $200 it will set you back a pretty penny compared to a manual brush that only costs a few bucks. But even if you don’t have money to burn, and who really does, the DiamondClean will lower your dental bill. And that means it will pay for itself over time.
In summary, we guess it goes without saying that we are not dentists, but for reasons we can’t put a finger on, the DiamondClean leaves our teeth feeling cleaner than the competition. Almost eerily clean. Frankly, it’s the only toothbrush that gives us that feeling. So naturally, it’s the one we like the best. That it is amazingly advanced technologically is an added plus.
